No-Limit Holdem Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker competitor in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather showed him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup whatever he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the adverse feedback from other people kill his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
He began playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a learning period and winning was not a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he defeated many of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and an eternal love for poker. Phil says that he’s learning every day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. Phil knows he makes blunders in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he favors winning money games on a regular basis.
