Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed betting on various card games at a young age. He found himself getting really competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were tough as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus even more on the game.
The real improvement in his skills began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly play against one another. He was able to access a number of the greatest minds in chess. Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
