Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems difficult initially, following a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming assortment of betting choices and because you have many individuals shooting for the high, along with several trying for the low hand.
