Omaha Hi Low: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi/low offers an amazing collection of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high, and a few trying for the low.
